I recently got home from a work trip and found out last night that my next one (which was to begin today) had been delayed. I noticed while the cars were side-by-side in the driveway (unusual, since they usually sit as pictured) that the 4Runner is smaller than the P71... by quite a bit (except height, duh) . This called for some brief G oogle action.

Length:
4Runner: 183"
Crown Vic: 212"

Width:
4Runner: 71"
Crown Vic: 78"

Curb Weight:
4Runner: 3,440 to 3,975 lbs (4x4 auto but cloth interior, so probably ~3800lb?)
Crown Vic: 3,942 to 3,964 lbs (Police spec, aka stripper model so 3,942lb)

This may explain why, other than being like sitting on the roof of my other cars, it doesn’t really feel that big or cumbersome to drive . In other 4Runner news, I’ve ordered a new rear bumper ( the one on there is critically rusty), adjusted the throttle cable to remove the 1"+ of slop at the pedal, and contemplated ordering parts for the rear brakes. It still very much needs cleaned.

Do you enjoy everyone in front of you driving 5 mph under the speed limit?

No, I hate it. I have considered getting some sort of mirror-printed “NOT A COP” to put in the top of the windshield or something.

That’s exactly what a cop would do!

Does the spot light still work/ would it be easy to remove?

It does still work, and I use it now and then so I’d not want to remove it (which wouldn’t be hard, either - but it leaves a hole in the A pillar).

When someone called in to Car Talk with this exact problem, they suggested installing a farm animals funny horn, in hopes of getting the “not a cop” message across  when you honk at them to get out of the way.

My first impression driving a p71 was that it felt like a big, heavy, slow, boat. Tippy, heavy, and just very cumbersome. And this was coming from a teenager whose primary driving experience at the time was a W -body Impala and an ‘85 3/4-ton Chevy van.

I was recently reminded of this, thinking to myself about how much they might weigh, being an old, ‘70's body-on-frame platform. I was frankly shocked. I was expecting heavy, just not by quite so much. My Jeep ZJ weighs considerably less, even. The only reason realistically they survived so long was that the original archaic pre-crumple-zone platform design meant they were stupidly solid... and also stupidly heavy as a result. There really was only two demographics looking for that, cops and old people. Neither of which was enough of a market for more than one manufacturer to want to take a slice.

Big old 70's cars are still big old ‘70's cars, even if you built it in the 2000's.

The 3rd gen drives much better than it has any right to.

I still stand by my position that, for what it is (i.e. a big old 70's platform) , the p71 drives very well. Also takes one hell of a beating (and rusting) without missing a beat.

This one really needs new shocks but it does drive pretty well. Also I’m fairly confident the adjusters in the rear brakes have seized up because it drives like the drums are way out of adjustment, and no amount of reverse-panic-stops has remedied that. Will have to pull a wheel soon to check - I suspect a rear brake rebuild will be in order.
